RG Kar rape-murder: Kolkata court convicts accused Sanjay Roy

A Kolkata court, on Saturday, January 18 pronounced Sanjay Roy guilty of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in West Bengal under sections 64, 66 and 103 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Saturday, January 18.

However, the accused Sanjay Roy claimed in court that he was framed. The judge after pronouncing the order stated that he would have the opportunity to speak on Monday.

The Sealdah court, where Roy’s trial was held, will declare his sentence on January 20, Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge, said.

The judgement was pronounced nearly two months after the in-camera trial commenced in November last year and 162 days after the heinous crime was committed on August 9, 2024.

The medic’s parents thanked the judge for the guilty verdict and said the court honoured the trust they had reposed in it.

No girl should face this: Victim’s mother

The mother of the victim issued a last-minute appeal through social media to the common people not to end the movement. “If the dreams of our deceased daughter do not get justice, her life-long achievements would become fruitless. We pray that no girl faces such pain which my daughter faced. All those who are responsible should not be spared at any cost. They should be punished so that no other daughter faces the same pain like ours,” the appeal from the victim’s mother read.

“The real justice will be achieved only when all the masterminds behind the crime are brought within the ambit of the investigation and punished. We all should raise the demand not for just the sake of my daughter but for the sake of security of all the daughters,” her appeal read.

“As a mother all I can say is that I have lost everything. But I will continue my fight for other daughters till justice is achieved,” her appeal concluded.

Kolkata Police raised layers of barricades within the entire court premises apprehending that there will be a major gathering of common people, representatives of the civil society as well the state’s medical fraternity.
